Today is the greatest day

I am a sparse Tumblr user at best, but momentous things happened in my life today, most of which were recounted by the dailywh.at. Clearly I’m an individual.

1. Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller is baaaack. “How can I be expected to go to work on a day like this?” I’m right there with ya.

2. Ben Folds Five is reuniting! Hello, angsty high school years. I can’t even… does that mean my signed memorabilia is worth less now?

3. Today is officially Gossip Girl day, as proclaimed by Michael Bloomberg. You know me. I love gossip.

4. Shit Liz Lemon Says. That is all. http://chzb.gr

5. The news ticker on the bottom of the Republican debate tonight reading “Pat and Vanna smashed behind the wheel” re: hosting the game show drunk.

6. I’ve officially had a Greek salad for lunch every day this week. This is not an accomplishment, but come on you guys, today’s was from Chef Geoff’s and had chunks of goat feta, three types of olives and spicy seared tuna. How could that be bad?

“Since the start of Lost, we were presented with a diverse group of individuals that had something in common besides surviving a plane crash: They were stuck in ruts of self-destructive behavior that needed to be dismantled. They needed forgiveness and correction and healing; they needed transformation and new meaning. The story encouraged us to believe that The Island offered the means to attain this change. Neat… except The Island’s redemption scheme was a sick, self-serving game designed by an immature intelligence. In the end, the castaways found liberation and renewal and fulfillment, but they got it in a most ironic fashion: By purging Jacob’s defective system and rebooting it. They changed the rules.”

Sometimes people ask me about how I created my little media empire. This is how.
Ira spent 20 years working at NPR before he started This American Life. Twenty years making mistakes, learning from them, thinking about what he’d do with his own show. When he started This Life, NPR turned him down. After 20 years. Told him to do it on his own. So he went out and won some fucking Peabodys.
The day Ira told me he enjoyed a particular episode of my stupid comedy podcast that I didn’t even know he’d every heard of much less listened to was one of the proudest days of my life. For serious.
And speaking of serious: SERIOUSLY, MAKE YOUR THING.

First you have to become a beginner.

In this week’s magazine, Tina Fey writes about the lessons she learned as a writer on “Saturday Night Live.” Fey and other women use the ladies’ room; “the men urinate in cups.” Harvard graduates write “commercial parodies about people wearing barrels after the 1929 stock-market crash”; improvisers from Second City create “loud drag characters named Vicki and Staci screaming their catchphrase over and over.” Click over to the site for more vintage Tina Fey video.

Oh, Tina. Best quotes:

“Not all the men at ‘S.N.L.’ whizzed in cups. But four or five out of twenty did, so the men have to own that one”

“Only in comedy, by the way, does an obedient white girl from the suburbs count as diversity.”
